Nigeria Shines at 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships

At the 2026 African Senior Weightlifting Championships held in Ismailia, Egypt, Nigeria's weightlifting team delivered an outstanding performance, amassing a total of 10 gold and five silver medals. The chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, commended the athletes for their achievements, stating that their performance reflects a renewed commitment to excellence in sports.

Notable performances included Ruth Nyong Asuquo, who won three gold medals in the women's 48kg division, lifting a combined total of 167kg. Omolola Didih also secured three gold medals in the women's 53kg category, with a total lift of 192kg.

Rafiat Afolashad Lawal continued Nigeria's dominance in the women's 58kg division with three gold medals. In the men's category, Omovigho Agboro won one gold and two silver medals in the men's 65kg event.

Dikko emphasized the need for athletes to remain focused and committed as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games, while also acknowledging the leadership of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, led by President Dr. Ibrahim Abdul.
