Nigeria Celebrates Silver Medal and Historic Basketball Win

At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Nigeria's Roland Ezuruike secured a silver medal in the men’s lightweight Group A para powerlifting event, marking the country's first medal at the Games. Ezuruike achieved a total of 153.9 points and narrowly missed a Commonwealth Games record lift of 190kg.

Following his performance, he received an immediate cash reward of $2,000 and qualified for an additional $2,000 performance bonus, totaling $4,000. This initiative is part of the National Sports Commission's athlete welfare and incentive program, aimed at motivating athletes through performance-based rewards.

In a historic achievement, Nigeria's men's 3×3 basketball team recorded its first-ever victory in the event, defeating the Cayman Islands 21-17. Key players Esosa Okundaye and Ikechukwu Nwamu each scored six points, showcasing teamwork and resilience.

Nwamu credited the team's success to extensive preparations organized by the National Sports Commission.
