Nigeria's Para Powerlifting Team Shines at Commonwealth Games

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigeria’s para powerlifting team achieved significant success, earning a total of $18,000 (approximately ₦27.5 million) in performance rewards. The National Sports Commission had announced cash incentives for medallists prior to the Games.

Esther Nworgu led the team by winning Nigeria’s first gold medal in the women’s lightweight category with a record-breaking performance of 119.0 points. She received an instant reward of $3,000 and an additional $5,000, totaling $8,000.

Esther Oyema secured silver with 115.5 points, earning $5,000, which included a $2,000 instant reward and $3,000 later. In the men’s lightweight category, veteran Roland Ezuruike claimed silver with 153.9 points, receiving $5,000 in rewards.

The NSC has pledged cumulative cash rewards of $8,000 for gold, $5,000 for silver, and $3,000 for bronze medalists. Team Nigeria aims to continue its strong performance in upcoming events.
