Nigeria Wins Historic 3×3 Basketball Match in Glasgow

On Friday, Nigeria made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by securing their first-ever victory in 3×3 basketball, defeating the Cayman Islands 21-17 in their Pool A opener. The Nigerian team reached the winning score with one minute and 36 seconds remaining, showcasing a disciplined performance characterized by sharp shooting and solid perimeter defense.

This victory marked an encouraging start to Nigeria's Commonwealth Games campaign, which includes participation in boxing and para powerlifting later that day. The achievement was celebrated by the Nigerian camp, with Bukola Olopade, the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, joining the players and officials post-match.

Olopade congratulated the team for their fighting spirit and determination, urging them to enjoy the victory while remaining focused on the challenges ahead. Nigeria is represented by 74 athletes across 10 sports in Glasgow, with the National Sports Commission aiming for 16 to 20 gold medals during the Games.
