Oluwafemiayo Sets World Record, Wins Gold for Nigeria

At the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria achieved significant success in para powerlifting on Friday, with Folashade Oluwafemiayo winning the country's second gold medal. Oluwafemiayo, the defending champion, set a new world record with a score of 134.8 points, reinforcing her status as a top para powerlifter.

Rita Ferdinand, also a Nigerian athlete, claimed the silver medal with a world record score of 128.2 points. This remarkable performance highlighted Nigeria's dominance in para powerlifting, as both athletes produced world record scores in the same competition.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) reported that Oluwafemiayo's victory was celebrated by Nigerian officials and teammates, emphasizing her consistency and determination. Earlier in the day, Esther Nworgu secured Nigeria's first gold medal in the women's lightweight para powerlifting event, while Esther Oyema won bronze in the same category.

Roland Ezuruike also contributed by winning silver in the men's lightweight Group A para powerlifting competition.
