Nigeria's Oluwafemiayo Sets World Record at Commonwealth Games

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigeria's Folashade Oluwafemiayo, the reigning Commonwealth world and Paralympic champion, set a new world record in the women’s para weightlifting heavyweight category, lifting 175kg to secure her gold medal. This victory marked Nigeria's second gold in the Para powerlifting event, contributing to a total of two gold and two silver medals for the country.

Oluwafemiayo, who serves as the lady captain of Team Nigeria, initially lifted 165kg and then 172kg before breaking her own record. Rita Ferdinand won a silver medal in the +79kg category with a world record lift of 128.2kg.

In the men's lightweight category, Roland Ezuruike narrowly missed gold, finishing second to Mark Swan, both lifting 153.9kg, with Ezuruike acknowledging his mistake in attempting another world record lift. Esther Nworgu secured gold in the women's lightweight category with a total lift of 119kg, while teammate Esther Oyema took silver with 115kg.
