Nigeria's Weightlifters Shine at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

On Monday at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Team Nigeria continued its impressive performance, with Rafiatu Folashade Lawal winning gold in the women's 58kg weightlifting event. Lawal set a new Commonwealth Games record with a total lift of 229kg, comprising a 103kg snatch and a 126kg clean and jerk.

She led the competition, finishing ahead of Canada's Ann-Sophie Taschereau, who took silver with 215kg, and India's Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam, who earned bronze with 199kg. Earlier in the day, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia clinched gold in the men's 71kg event, also setting a new Commonwealth Games record with a combined lift of 319kg.

Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi won silver with 314kg, while Ezekiel Moses of Nauru secured bronze with 310kg. Onome Omolola Didih followed suit by winning gold in the women's 53kg event, achieving a total of 206kg, which included a record-setting 93kg snatch.

The day's achievements brought Nigeria's medal tally to six gold and four silver medals, marking one of the country's most successful weightlifting campaigns in Commonwealth Games history.
