Observers Urge INEC to Improve for Future Elections

On February 21, 2026, the FCT area council elections were held, and observers from a coalition of civil society organizations released a report emphasizing the need for improvements by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The report, presented by Princ Boluwasi Qudu Adeyemi, noted that while the elections were largely peaceful, voter turnout was generally low.

Observers arrived early at polling units, and the electoral process was conducted without significant disruptions. The report praised the performance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the availability of voter registration at polling units.

INEC was urged to enhance logistical arrangements for future elections, including proper training for poll officials and voter education initiatives to address declining voter turnout. The elections featured 16 political parties, with the APC's Christoph Zakka Maikalangu receiving the highest votes and being declared the winner.

The report called for continued engagement from security agencies to maintain peace during elections.
