FCT Polls Today: INEC Tests 2026 Electoral Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is conducting the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) polls today, which serves as the first significant test of the 2026 Electoral Act. This election follows recent directives from President Bola Tinubu, who urged eligible voters and security agencies to ensure orderly conduct during the polls.

The FCT elections involve 1,680,315 registered voters across 2,822 polling units. INEC has introduced a bimodal voter accreditation system and provisions for electronic transmission of results, although civil society groups have expressed concerns regarding the hybrid system.

The PVC collection rate in the FCT stands at 94.4%, with significant participation noted across various area councils. Aminu Idri, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, reported that the elections are scheduled to commence at 8:30 AM.

The election also coincides with bye-elections in River State and Kano State, where voter turnout is a concern.
