Amnesty International Promotes Women's Rights in Abuja

On the occasion of the 2026 International Women's Day, Amnesty International organized a women's rights awareness campaign in the Sabo Ido Sarki community, located in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. The program manager, Barbara Magaji, highlighted that many women in rural communities are often unaware of the laws that protect their rights and the avenues available for seeking redress when those rights are violated.

The outreach efforts are not limited to the Federal Capital Territory, as Amnesty International plans to conduct similar activities in six other states. Chioma Onyenucheya, chairperson of the Abuja branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), partnered with Amnesty International to educate residents about various forms of violence against women, including rape, child abuse, and forced marriages.

She encouraged victims to report cases to community leaders and law enforcement. Bello Sarki, the village head, commended Amnesty International for bringing human rights awareness to the community.
