NPC and EU Launch Initiative to Prevent Election Violence

On June 20, 2026, Ekiti State will hold a governorship election, prompting the National Peace Committee (NPC) and the European Union (EU) to unveil an initiative aimed at preventing election violence. Asab Ndahi, NPC Program Manager, emphasized the importance of early response interventions to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process.

The initiative includes a three-day capacity-building workshop for community observers across 16 local government areas, organized in collaboration with the Kukah Centre. The workshop aims to equip participants with practical skills to identify risks, verify incidents, and report early signs of electoral tension.

The program is designed to strengthen collaboration among stakeholders to safeguard the electoral process and promote peaceful democratic participation. Deborah Obafemi from the Kukah Centre highlighted the need for evidence-based monitoring to address electoral violence and ensure credible elections.

Rita Ilevbar noted the importance of empowering stakeholders to identify electoral security threats and respond appropriately.
