SON Advocates for Energy Efficiency Standards in Nigeria

During the 2026 World Standards Day celebration in Abuja, the Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, emphasized the need for broader adoption of quality and energy-efficiency standards to make clean energy more affordable for Nigerians. He stated that effective standards are vital for ensuring that energy technologies and products are safe, reliable, and affordable, which can help consumers reduce costs over time.
Okeke mentioned that SON has developed and approved 80 standards in 2024 related to the compressed natural gas (CNG) initiative, covering various aspects of the CNG value chain. He also introduced SON's Mandatory Energy Labelling Scheme and Minimum Energy Performance Standards (SONMEL), aimed at helping consumers make informed purchasing decisions regarding energy-efficient appliances.
Okeke urged manufacturers to prioritize quality and comply with approved standards, particularly in the production and sale of electrical and electronic products.
