Justice Central to Nigeria's Energy Transition Discussions

On a recent date, stakeholders from Nigeria's climate, energy, civil society, and media sectors gathered at the Justice and Energy Transition Roundtable in Abuja, organized by the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation with support from the Ford Foundation. They called for justice to be central to Nigeria's energy transition, ensuring that the shift towards a lower-carbon economy does not sacrifice energy access, job creation, or economic growth.

Dr. Tenioye Majekodunmi, Director General of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), stated that Nigeria's transition must reflect its unique development realities while remaining committed to the Paris Agreement and the goal of net-zero emissions by 2060. She emphasized that climate action should facilitate development rather than hinder it.

Amara Nwakpa, Director General of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation, highlighted the need for justice to guide the energy transition process, ensuring that policies serve affected communities and avoid past mistakes associated with the fossil fuel industry.
