Constituents Protest Against Edo Deputy Speaker's Reelection

On April 24, 2026, constituents in Orhionmwon, Edo State, protested against the reelection of Hon. Osamwonyi Atu, the Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, during his campaign flag-off. The protest, primarily led by youth, was fueled by allegations of unfulfilled campaign promises made during the 2023 elections.

Protesters expressed their dissatisfaction over prolonged power outages lasting 15 years and the incomplete comprehensive school project. They questioned the Deputy Speaker's effectiveness, with some carrying placards that highlighted their grievances.

In response, Hon. Atu dismissed the allegations, attributing the protest to individuals affected by a recently passed anti-cultism law. Hon. Martin Ozakpolor, who organized the campaign, claimed the protest was sponsored by rival aspirants aiming to discredit Atu.

Despite the unrest, the Deputy Speaker received prayers for success in his reelection bid from members of the Abudu Elder Council.
