Atiku Abubakar Responds to INEC's ADC Deregistration Rejection

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, reacted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejecting a fresh attempt to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The INEC's decision followed a Supreme Court ruling that challenged the legal basis of the application for deregistration, stating it did not meet constitutional requirements.

INEC emphasized that its authority to deregister parties is not arbitrary and is strictly guided by existing laws. Phrank Shaibu, Atiku's Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, described the move to deregister the ADC as a desperate and failed plot, reflecting fears of a poorly executed political scheme aimed at undermining opposition voices.

He warned against attempts to stifle political competition, asserting that democracy cannot thrive when power seeks to silence opposition. Shaibu also referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling that nullified a Court of Appeal decision regarding the recognition of David Mark as the National Chairman of the ADC.
