Atiku Abubakar's Challenge in Choosing Running Mate

Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is navigating a complex decision regarding his running mate for the 2027 elections. Following his emergence as the ADC flag bearer, speculation has arisen around potential candidates, including former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the current Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Okonjo-Iweala, who began her second term on September 1, 2023, has distanced herself from the political arena, emphasizing her commitment to her role at the WTO until 2029. Other names mentioned include Emeka Ihedioha, a former governor of Imo State, and Rotimi Amaechi, a two-term governor of Rivers State.

Political dynamics suggest that Atiku's choice may be influenced by the need for regional balance, particularly in the Southeast, where he faces competition from Peter Obi. Dele Momodu has also expressed support for Atiku's candidacy, while Phrank Shaibu emphasized that the selection will prioritize competence over mere symbolism.
