Benue Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Insecurity Ahead of 2027

Godwin Edoh, representing Agatu State Constituency in the Benue State House of Assembly, expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating insecurity in Agatu local government area, which could hinder the conduct of the 2027 general elections. Speaking to journalists in Makurdi on Monday, Edoh noted that several communities have been abandoned over the past four years due to recurrent attacks by Fulani herdsmen.

He mentioned that despite the deployment of air force soldiers, special police squads, and civil defense personnel, the presence of security agents has not deterred the attacks, leading to the relocation of the local government headquarters to Obagaji. The lawmaker lamented the destruction of basic amenities such as schools and healthcare centers, which has severely affected the community.

Edoh praised Governor Hyacinth Alia for directing security agents to flush out criminal elements but urged federal and state governments to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) in returning to their homes and resuming their livelihoods.
