Urgent Military Action Needed to Address Benue Killings

The House of Representatives has raised an alarm over the escalating violence in Benue State, specifically within the Kwand Ushongo Federal Constituency. Terseer Ugbor, a member representing this constituency, moved a motion calling for the Federal Government and security agencies to urgently strengthen military operations to halt the attacks.

Recent coordinated assaults by armed mercenaries have led to significant casualties, including the deaths of at least 17 people during an attack on February 3, 2026, in Turan District, and 16 people on March 5, 2026, in the Mbaav community. Ugbor highlighted the destruction of properties and the mass displacement of residents.

The Nigerian Army has deployed troops to the area, but operational constraints have hindered effective responses. The lawmakers urged the government to enhance military capabilities with modern equipment and to impose a ban on illegal mining activities that fuel insecurity.

They emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent further humanitarian crises and stabilize the affected communities.
