Christian Groups Petition Trump Over Nigeria's 2027 Ticket

A coalition of Christian and human rights groups, operating under the Christian Youth Alliance of Nigeria (CYAN), has submitted a petition to U.S. President Donald Trump, the U.S.

Congress, and diplomatic missions concerning the planned retention of the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in Nigeria’s 2027 election. The coalition warns that this arrangement poses a significant threat to Christians, especially in Northern Nigeria.

The petition, made public in Jos, Plateau State, argues that the continuation of the Muslim-Muslim ticket by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima could exacerbate religious divisions and political exclusion. CYAN criticized the Federal Government’s policy of rehabilitating repentant terrorists, advocating for prosecution instead.

The coalition urged the U.S. government to maintain Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) and to link any future reviews to verified improvements in the protection of Christian communities. Additionally, they called for investigations into attacks on Christians and alleged foreign influence in Nigeria’s political process.
