Coalition Pushes for Unified Opposition Candidate for 2027

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians, known as the G-100, is reviving efforts for a united front among opposition parties to nominate a single presidential candidate against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This initiative follows a national summit held in April 2026 in Ibadan, where opposition parties declared their intention to present a unified candidate.

However, several aspirants from that summit have since declared their candidacies with different political parties. In a seven-page open letter dated August 2, 2026, titled “The doctrine of a necessary democratic Opposition,” the G-100 argued that only a united opposition can prevent the erosion of democracy and the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The letter called on key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to prioritize collective goals over personal ambitions. The G-100 emphasized that Nigeria's democratic future relies on presenting a credible alternative to the current administration.
