G-100 Coalition Calls for Unified Opposition in Nigeria

On August 2, 2026, a coalition of 100 prominent Nigerians known as the G-100 released a seven-page open letter titled “The doctrine of a necessary democratic Opposition.” The letter urged key opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar (African Democratic Congress), Peter Obi (Nigeria Democratic Congress), Rotimi Amaechi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to set aside personal ambitions and negotiate a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. The letter, signed by notable figures such as Salihu Lukman, Nnenna Ukeje, and Simon Achuba, emphasized that Nigeria's democratic future relies on a credible and united opposition.

The G-100 warned that the greatest threat to Nigeria is the erosion of democratic institutions due to a fragmented opposition, which distracts from building a viable electoral alternative. They criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress for consolidating power while opposition parties remain divided by ambition.

The coalition stressed that democracy cannot survive without a credible opposition capable of peacefully replacing the government through elections.
