Opposition Struggles to Unite Against Tinubu for 2027

The opposition's initiative to present a unified presidential candidate against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 election is losing traction, as significant factions and parties express differing views on the proposed alliance. The Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains open to collaboration, while the Nyesom Wike-backed faction has dismissed the possibility of an alliance.

The camp of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar stated that opposition parties have already nominated their candidates but are still committed to cooperation. Following a summit on April 25 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where opposition leaders agreed to explore a single candidate, many attendees have since emerged as candidates for various parties.

Atiku and Rotimi Amaechi are now the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), respectively, while Seyi Makinde is the presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM). Other leaders, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, have also secured nominations.

The Independent National Electoral Commission's deadline for party primaries has passed, with candidates now uploaded on the INEC portal.
