Adeyanju Warns Against Obi's Church Campaigns

Deji Adeyanju, a human rights lawyer and political activist, criticized Peter Obi's return to church campaigns for political support, warning that this approach could exacerbate divisions in Nigeria. Adeyanju's comments were made in a post on his X handle on September 1, 2026.

He highlighted that the Electoral Act 2026 explicitly prohibits political campaigns in places of worship and bars politicians from engaging in religious, tribal, or sectional campaigning. Adeyanju argued that both politicians and religious leaders are violating this law by using church pulpits as platforms for political endorsement.

He also condemned a governor who recently gathered religious clerics to publicly endorse President Tinubu, calling it equally unacceptable. Adeyanju urged pastors and religious leaders to stop providing politicians with platforms within their congregations, asserting that electoral contests should focus on policy proposals rather than religious or ethnic identities.

He warned against repeating the divisive tactics seen during the 2023 general election campaigns.
