INEC to Deploy 1.4 Million Staff for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to deploy approximately 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel across more than 176,000 polling units for the 2027 general election. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, made this disclosure during a meeting with the Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PEAM) of the International Republican Institute (IRI), led by Ambassador Dr. Dan Twining.

The operational roadmap for the 2027 elections includes continuous voter registration, register audits using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS), and enhanced logistics arrangements to ensure timely openings at polling locations. Amupitan highlighted the importance of accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and other vulnerable groups.

He identified key threats to voter confidence, including insecurity and vote-buying, and stated that INEC collaborates with security and anti-graft agencies to enforce electoral laws. He assured the IRI delegation of INEC's commitment to a free, fair, and credible election, reiterating that the Commission has no preference for any political party or candidate.
