Court Sets Deadline for Suit Against Jonathan's 2027 Bid

The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled May 15, 2026, for a definitive hearing regarding a suit aimed at disqualifying former President Goodluck Jonathan from running in the 2027 presidential elections. Justice Peter Lifu presided over the case, which was previously delayed due to the absence of the plaintiff, Johnmari Jideobi, whose lawyer failed to appear in court without prior notice.

The defendants include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). Counsel for Jonathan, Chri Uch, argued for the dismissal of the suit, claiming it was not diligently prosecuted and sought a cost of 5 million naira against the plaintiff for allegedly abandoning the case.

The court noted the absence of proof of service of notice to the INEC and AGF, which is essential for legal proceedings. The plaintiff's suit questions Jonathan's eligibility under sections 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, asserting that he has already served two terms following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
