EU Confirms Electoral Expert Mission for Nigeria's 2027 Elections

The European Union (EU) has denied reports of rejecting an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe Nigeria's 2027 general elections. In a clarification issued on Monday, the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS stated that it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) instead.

The EU received a formal invitation from INEC dated April 17, 2026, and responded on July 28, 2026, expressing gratitude and confirming the deployment of independent experts as observers. This mission will consist of two to four experts accredited by INEC, marking a shift from the full-scale Election Observation Missions previously conducted, including the one for the 2023 elections.

The EU's decision comes amid concerns regarding Nigeria's electoral process and the security situation, as well as the treatment of its observers following the 2023 elections. The clarification is significant as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify, with INEC aiming to bolster confidence in the electoral process.
