INEC Seeks Enhanced Funding from RMAFC for 2027 Elections

On July 14, 2026, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), appealed to Dr.

Moham Bello Shehu, Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), for enhanced funding and improved staff welfare. This appeal was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration between the two federal bodies ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Prof. Amupitan highlighted the financial burden of conducting elections, noting that INEC bears the full cost of operations across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He stressed the importance of competitive remuneration to retain skilled personnel, as recent trends showed experienced staff migrating due to inadequate pay. The INEC Chairman also mentioned upcoming elections, including the presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, and the governorship elections on February 6, 2027.

He assured RMAFC of INEC's commitment to delivering credible elections and acknowledged the support from RMAFC in ensuring this goal.
