INEC Stresses Funding Importance for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has underscored the critical role of adequate funding in ensuring the success of the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman Moham Haruna stated that early access to resources is essential for effective planning and procurement of materials across the country.

The commission plans to conduct a mock presidential election exercise ahead of the polls to eliminate technical hitches and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process. Haruna noted that the complexity of electoral logistics requires substantial planning and that funding should be released not later than six months before the elections.

He expressed concerns that the commission has not yet received the necessary financial support. Additionally, Haruna mentioned that lessons from previous elections would inform measures to enhance the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.

The commission is also preparing to engage with the judiciary regarding potential last-minute court orders that could affect electoral arrangements.
