INEC Extends Voter Registration Deadline to July 2026

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced an extension of the ongoing voter registration exercise by an additional two weeks, moving the deadline from July 10, 2026, to July 24, 2026. This decision aims to enable eligible Nigerians to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.

INEC Chairman Mohammed Kudu Haruna stated that the extension follows consultations with political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral stakeholders who expressed concerns about the number of eligible Nigerians yet to register. The commission will also launch an online self-service registration platform on July 8, 2026, allowing first-time voters to register electronically.

This new system is designed to simplify the registration process and includes features to ensure the integrity and security of the voter registry. INEC emphasized that the extension demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian is denied the opportunity to participate in future elections.
