INEC Prepares for 2027 Elections with Key Updates

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is actively preparing for the Presidential and National Assembly elections scheduled for January 16, 2027, with 114 days remaining as of September 24, 2026. This update was provided during a Democracy and Governance Forum in Abuja, organized by West Africa Democracy Radio (WADR).

Mrs. Helen Ajayi, INEC's Director of Planning and Monitoring, represented INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan at the event. Ajayi detailed that the Continuous Voter Registration exercise and the public display of the preliminary voters' register have concluded.

Ongoing efforts include generating a PDF version of the register and synchronizing voter registration data. Arrangements for Permanent Voter Card collection are underway.

Procurement of non-sensitive electoral materials has begun, and staff training for personnel at Grade Levels 8 to 16 has commenced. INEC is also launching a public awareness campaign aimed at educating voters, particularly focusing on women, young people, and persons with disabilities.

Additionally, nationwide zonal readiness assessments have started, with the South-West zone assessment held in Lagos from September 7 to 9.
