INEC Completes Key Milestones for 2027 Elections

Politics

On October 31, 2026, INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan announced that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had completed nine of the 14 electoral milestones necessary for the 2027 general elections. This announcement was made during a meeting in Abuja with a pre-election fact-finding mission from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), led by former Sierra Leone Vice-President Victor Bockarie Foh.

Amupitan detailed that the completed milestones included three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the nationwide physical display of the Preliminary Register of Voters. The commission's National Register of Voters has surpassed 103 million.

The presidential and National Assembly elections are set for January 16, 2027, while the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections will occur on February 6, 2027. INEC is also implementing a field-based approach to assess logistics and operational capacity across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones and is enhancing transparency through technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).
