Information Minister Urges Ethical Broadcasting Ahead of 2027 Elections

On September 29, 2026, in Bauchi, Mohammed Idris, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, called on broadcasters to uphold accuracy, fairness, and professional ethics in their reporting as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 elections. Speaking through Jibrin Baba Ndace, the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, at the 3rd Annual National Conference of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters, Idris stressed that responsible broadcasting is essential for protecting democracy.

He highlighted the need for broadcasters to ensure that information is accurate, verified, and contextualized, while also distinguishing between facts, allegations, and opinions. Idris warned against hate speech and the spread of false information during the electoral period and urged broadcasters to provide space for legitimate debate.

He also mentioned Federal Government investments in the broadcasting sector, including the Digital Switch Over platform and modernization efforts for NTA, FRCN, and VON. Idris emphasized that the future of broadcasting will be influenced by technology, but its credibility relies on the integrity of its practitioners.
