Niger Christians Demand Deputy Governor Position for 2027

On Tuesday, during a press briefing in Minna, the Christian Niger State AEGI Coalition called on Governor Moham Umaru Bago to appoint a Christian as his running mate for the 2027 gubernatorial elections. The coalition, represented by its chairman Jonathan Vatsa, expressed concerns over the marginalization of Christians in the state over the past two decades.

They vehemently rejected the continuation of a Muslim-Muslim governorship ticket, stating that it undermines the Christian population, which constitutes 45% of the state's demographic. Vatsa emphasized that the coalition would not tolerate a repeat of the previous administration's approach, particularly following the 2023 elections.

They urged the APC to ensure that the ticket reflects fair equity and inclusivity, advocating for a Christian deputy governor from the Niger East zone B senatorial district. The coalition expressed unanimous support for Bago's second-term bid, contingent upon the appointment of a Christian as deputy.
