NSCIA and JNI Urge Clerics to Verify Information Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) have called on Islamic clerics to adopt an apolitical stance and verify information before disseminating it, particularly in light of the approaching 2027 general elections. During a workshop held in Abuja, Secretary General Prof.

Haq O. Oloyed emphasized the importance of clerics in addressing misinformation that can exacerbate religious tensions and societal mistrust.

Mallam Abba Jimoh from NSCIA noted that misinformation can lead to real-world harm, including health crises and violence. The clerics were urged to act as champions of truth and peace, adhering to Islamic teachings that advocate for verification of information.

Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu also advised clerics to avoid political entanglements and focus on their spiritual responsibilities. The workshop aimed to equip clerics with the necessary skills to navigate the complex information landscape and avoid the pitfalls of fake news, especially with the rise of sophisticated misinformation tactics.
