Falana and Adams Warn of Single Candidate for 2027 Elections

During a memorial lecture held at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos, human rights lawyer Femi Falana and Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, cautioned against the potential emergence of a single presidential candidate for Nigeria's 2027 general elections. They highlighted the increasing interference of the judiciary in political party affairs, which they believe undermines Nigeria's democratic system and reduces electoral competitiveness.

Falana criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission's announcement regarding the African Democratic Congress's leadership dispute, arguing that such actions could destabilize political parties and trigger unrest. He also noted that despite calls for restructuring, state governments have failed to utilize devolved powers effectively.

Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress, echoed concerns about the centralization of power benefiting a small group, while Omoyele Sowore warned that current political and economic conditions could lead Nigerians toward revolutionary change. The event honored the late Yinka Odumakin, a prominent figure in Nigeria's pro-democracy struggle.
