Opposition Parties Unite for Single Candidate in 2027

Opposition parties in Nigeria have announced plans to present a single presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections. This decision was made during a national summit held in Ibadan, where prominent opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, and Taminu Turaki, gathered.

The communiqué emphasized the need to challenge the ruling Progressives Congress and expressed concerns about the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, calling for the removal of its chairman, Joash Ojo Amupitan, due to allegations of bias. The opposition also urged the National Assembly to urgently review the Electoral Act of 2026, arguing that certain provisions undermine the credibility of future elections.

Governor Seyi Makinde warned that Nigeria's democracy is gradually weakening due to political concentration, stressing the necessity of a strong alternative for effective political representation. Pat Utomi highlighted the economic hardships facing the country, while David Mark described the summit as a crucial moment in Nigeria's political history.
