Falana Critiques Illegal Campaigns Ahead of 2027 Elections

Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, issued a press statement on Wednesday, expressing alarm over the political class's "frenzy" ahead of the 2027 elections. He condemned the illegal campaign activities and power-grabbing maneuvers, stating they distract from pressing issues like insecurity and poverty.

Falana highlighted the failure of the current administration to utilize public funds effectively, particularly the N98 billion grant for universal basic education. He reminded politicians that the Electoral Act 2026 prohibits public campaigning 150 days before elections, which are set for January 16, 2027, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly elections, respectively.

Falana called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the State Security Service, to immediately halt these illegal activities. He emphasized the need for a refocus on governance rather than the ongoing electoral campaigns.
