Fayemi Critiques Atiku's Subsidy Proposal as Political Strategy

During an interview on Arise TV, Kayode Fayemi, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), compared Atiku Abubakar's proposal to restore petrol subsidy to the APC's Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket from the 2023 general election, describing it as a political strategy rather than a genuine economic policy. Atiku Abubakar, who intends to run for the presidency in 2027, criticized the Federal Government for a lack of accountability regarding funds saved from subsidy removal and proposed a targeted intervention to support domestic production.

President Bola Tinubu responded to Atiku's proposal, labeling it as indicative of "serious ignorance" regarding governance and economic matters. Fayemi supported the removal of the petrol subsidy but criticized the implementation by Tinubu's administration, highlighting the absence of protective measures for vulnerable Nigerians.

He noted that the groundwork for subsidy removal was laid by former President Muhammadu Buhari's administration and emphasized the need for adequate safety nets to mitigate the impact on the poor.
