Atiku Abubakar's Petrol Subsidy Proposal Critiqued

Atiku Abubakar's proposal to restore petrol subsidies in Nigeria has faced scrutiny for not providing a fully costed economic policy. Professor Farooq Kperogi defended Atiku's plan, suggesting it unsettled President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but the proposal lacks critical details such as the cost of the subsidy, funding sources, and safeguards.

Kperogi noted that Atiku's previous personal attacks on Tinubu regarding his educational credentials yielded little political benefit. The Chicago State University confirmed Tinubu's attendance and graduation in 1979, and no evidence of forgery was found regarding his certificate submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Atiku's subsidy plan includes preferential pricing for qualifying refineries, but it remains unclear what the pricing structure will be, the annual ceiling, and how it will be financed. The proposal has not yet addressed the pressing economic concerns of Nigerians regarding food, transportation, and employment.
