ADC Alleges INEC Faces Pressure from APC Ahead of 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed alarm regarding the increasing pressure on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, from the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC's national publicity secretary, stated in an interview that INEC is under significant pressure to maintain its independence while navigating political influences. Abdullahi emphasized that the pressure on INEC is not merely an individual issue but a broader institutional challenge, indicating that the commission must demonstrate its loyalty to the Nigerian constitution and the people.

He remarked that history will judge Prof. Amupitan based on the role he chooses to play in Nigeria's democratic history, highlighting the importance of INEC's independence in the electoral process.
