INEC Sets 2027 Election Dates Amid Ramadan Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the presidential and national assembly elections in Nigeria will take place on February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections are set for March 6, 2027. INEC has scheduled party primaries from May 22 to June 20, 2026.

However, concerns have emerged regarding the overlap of these election dates with the holy month of Ramadan, which runs from February 7 to March 8, 2027. Former presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, representing the People's Democratic Party, has urged INEC to reconsider the February 20 date, highlighting the potential impact on voter turnout and logistical challenges during Ramadan.

INEC Chairman Moham Haruna stated that the commission is committed to adhering to constitutional timelines and regulations while remaining sensitive to stakeholders' concerns. The commission aims to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the electoral process and will continue consultations to address these issues.
