National Assembly and INEC Propose New Election Dates

The National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are in discussions to shift the presidential election date to January 16, 2027. This proposal follows a report from INEC and suggests that the governorship elections be held on January 30, 2027, with the presidential elections scheduled for February 20, 2027, and governorship elections to follow on March 6, 2027.

Sources within the electoral body and legislature indicate that the January date has gained traction after meetings with INEC officials and leaders from the Senate and House of Representatives. However, the proposal is expected to be debated before a final decision is made.

The National Assembly has temporarily suspended work on the harmonization of the Electoral Act amendment bill to attend an emergency plenary session scheduled for Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The proposed election dates coincide with Ramadan, which begins on February 7 and ends on March 8, 2027, raising concerns about voter participation during the fasting period.

Stakeholders have called for a review of the schedule, with alternative dates being considered.
