INEC Reschedules 2027 Elections, Parties Face Challenges

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a rescheduling of the 2027 elections to January 16 and February 20, 2027. This change has placed several political parties in a challenging position, as they are not fully prepared to produce candidates.

The rescheduling has raised concerns, particularly among Muslim leaders, about potential clashes with Ramadan, which could affect voter turnout. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) are among the parties facing significant internal strife, with factions within the PDP, such as the one led by Kabiru Turaki, preparing for the elections contingent on INEC's assurance of credible elections.

The Labour Party (LP) is also working to expand its membership and restructure its leadership. Meanwhile, the ADC has called for clarity on the use of technology in the electoral process.

With the campaign period expected to commence in September 2026, parties are under pressure to mobilize their members effectively within a tight timeline.
