INEC Announces New Measures to Combat Election Fraud

On Wednesday, during a meeting in Abuja, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), declared an end to electoral results manipulation, introducing new voting measures ahead of the 2027 general elections. He stated that ballot box snatching would no longer determine election outcomes due to stronger legal and technological systems being implemented.

Amupitan highlighted the significance of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVA) and the INEC results viewing portal (IREV) in improving transparency and reducing electoral malpractice. He noted that the presidential election is scheduled for January 16, 2027, followed by governorship elections on February 6, 2027.

Despite advancements, Amupitan expressed concerns about voter apathy, particularly in urban areas, and emphasized the need for comprehensive voter education campaigns to engage citizens effectively. He called for collaboration with the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to promote civic responsibility and combat misinformation ahead of the elections.
