INEC and Akwa Ibom Officials Warn Against Electoral Violence

On September 15, 2023, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Akwa Ibom State Government, and various security agencies expressed alarm over the risk of electoral violence as the 2027 general elections approach. This warning was issued during a two-day seminar in Uyo, organized by the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Akwa Ibom State Government, themed “Promoting Peaceful, Free, Fair and Credible Elections in Akwa Ibom State.” Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, representing Governor Umo Eno, emphasized that no political ambition justifies violence, urging politicians to pursue their goals through peaceful means.

Eno condemned the recruitment of youths as political thugs and called for collaboration among various stakeholders to maintain peace. CP Baba Mohammed Azare assured neutrality and professionalism from the police, warning against thuggery and hate speech.

The Paramount Ruler of Uyo, Edidem Sylvanus Okon, encouraged stakeholders to disseminate the seminar's message to uphold Akwa Ibom's peaceful reputation.
