INEC Confirms Deceased Names on Voter Register Ahead of 2027

Professor Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), revealed that names of deceased individuals have been found on Nigeria's voter register, some dating back 15 years. This revelation has sparked concerns regarding the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections and the potential for electoral manipulation.

Amupitan stated that INEC is collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to ensure a credible and transparent voter register. He noted that the current register contains over 100 million entries, which includes discrepancies that need to be addressed.

The NIMC's database reportedly covers 136 million Nigerians, which will aid in the verification process. Dr.

Samuel Adegboy, a university lecturer, expressed concerns that the presence of deceased individuals on the register could facilitate electoral fraud. Amupitan did not disclose the exact number of deceased individuals on the register but acknowledged the issue as a significant challenge that needs to be resolved to improve electoral outcomes.
