INEC to Establish Voting Centres for IDPs in Plateau
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced plans to create voting centres for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in nine local government areas of Plateau State ahead of the 2027 general election. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Plateau State, Prof. Samuel Egwu, identified the affected areas as Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Riyom, Jos South, Mangu, Kanam, Kanke, Wase, and Bokkos.
Egwu emphasized that IDPs have the fundamental right to vote, and this initiative aims to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised. He made these remarks during a multi-stakeholder dialogue on election security management organized by the CLEEN Foundation in Jos.
The dialogue involved security agencies, election stakeholders, and community representatives to discuss strategies for promoting peaceful elections. Mr. Peter Maduoma, Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, highlighted the importance of citizens' engagement and community threat mapping for election security.
Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Faniyan Ayodeji, also praised the dialogue as a platform for collaboration towards credible elections.
