INEC Plans Nationwide Simultaneous Voting for 2027 Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is targeting simultaneous voting across all polling units in Nigeria for the 2027 General Elections, as announced by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan during a workshop in Abuja. Amupitan stated the goal is to ensure that voting starts at the same time nationwide, contingent on effective logistics and optimal technology.
He noted that INEC is learning from recent off-cycle elections and has begun early procurement and distribution of non-sensitive materials, along with acquiring new vehicles and conducting nationwide readiness assessments. INEC has acquired 57,000 new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices, which are currently undergoing software hardening, battery optimization, and biometric calibration.
Amupitan stressed the importance of transparent management of election results, urging editors to help combat misinformation. NGE President Eze Anaba called for a stronger media partnership with INEC to enhance public trust in the electoral process, emphasizing the need for credible information and a transparent electoral system.
