INEC Partners Lagos Oba for Peaceful 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially partnered with Oba Rilwan Babatunde Osuolale Aremu Akiolu, the Oba of Lagos, and the Lagos Traditional Council to foster peace and encourage citizen participation in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This collaboration was announced by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a courtesy visit to the monarch at Iga Idunganran, Lagos Island, on Tuesday, which marked the conclusion of INEC's South-West Zonal Readiness Assessment and Staff Interactive Session.

Prof. Amupitan stated that traditional institutions are vital for maintaining peace and protecting democracy, urging the monarch to mobilize citizens for active electoral participation. He presented three requests to the Oba: to seek royal blessings for INEC personnel, to motivate residents to complete their voter registration, and to advocate for peace among community leaders.

The INEC Chairman underscored the significance of traditional rulers as enduring pillars of society, capable of guiding political discourse towards constructive engagement rather than divisive rhetoric.
