INEC Registers 3.4 Million New Voters in Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 3,441,121 new voters have been registered as of April 3, 2023, during the second phase of the nationwide voter registration exercise. This figure includes 2,068,384 citizens who completed their registration online and 1,372,737 who registered physically at designated centers.

Jigawa State recorded the highest number of registrations at 201,047, accounting for 5.84% of the total. Lagos and Kano followed with 181,095 and 177,681 registrations, respectively.

Youths aged 18-34 represent a dominant demographic, with 2,354,768 registrations, making up 68.43% of the total. Gender distribution indicates that women, totaling 1,922,143 registrations (55.86%), outnumber men, who account for 1,518,978 registrations (44.14%).

Students are the largest group among new voters, with 1,235,931 registrations (35.92%). The registration process is currently suspended in the Federal Capital Territory due to the area council elections held on February 21, 2023.

INEC encourages eligible Nigerians to register before the deadline.
